大致来说，repression的意思是“压抑的行为或被压抑的状态”，在心理学上翻译为“压抑作用”：从有意识的头脑中无意识的排斥痛苦的冲动、欲望或恐惧。
而suppression在心理学上翻译为“抑制”或“障碍”：有意识的将不可接受的欲望、思想或记忆从脑中驱除出去。
